Canoe Barge Weekend on the Colorado River
Here is some info on how a Southern California YMCA group has run the lower Colorado River in canoe barges every May since 2001. The 35-mile float from Walter's camp to Martinez Lake evolved into a motorized barge event after enduring strong headwinds in 2001 and 2002. Catamarans are built from 2 canoes, and those are tied together, forming 4- or 6-canoe party barges. A 3- to 5-HP outboard can push up to 6 clustered canoes. Without a motor, it's 9 to 14 hours of serious paddling, depending on wind. The trip is loads of fun, but there's also lots of prep work, and don't forget about Safety. Some reference info that's been used by the YMCA group...
